From eald to new: Translating medieval poetry for the 21st century, 6-7th June 2014
This conference brings together literary and academic translators working with Old Irish, Old English and Old Norse Poetry to discuss the translations of medieval texts into modern languages. It explores the ideology of translation, the subtleties of the translation process, and the teaching of translation in modern university settings in relation to memory, adaptation and remediation. It also examines the cultural and historical inflection of individual translations, the ways in which the student’s experience of medieval literature is affected by the translation adopted for study, and the particular challenges related to the translation and reception of early medieval vernacular poetry.

June 5 6:30-8:30 Public Poetry Reading with readings from leading local and international poets.
June 6-7 Conference. This includes plenary papers from Professor Hugh Magennis (Queen’s University Belfast), Dr Carolyne Larrington (University of Oxford), Dr Chris Jones (University of St Andrew’s) and Dr Heather O’Donoghue (University of Oxford).
The conference dinner will be held in Market Lane at 8pm and costs €30.
