University College Cork is delighted to be hosting the 2014 meeting of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music, UK & Ireland branch.

Sunday 14 September:

Day 1 will take place at the Department of Music (St Vincent’s, Sunday’s Well Road, Building 74, map reference G2 on the UCC campus map).

Days 2 and 3 will be held in the O’Rahilly Building on UCC’s main campus (Building 62, map reference G6). It is approximately a 15-minute walk from main campus to the Department of Music. There are many good B&B’s close to main campus, as well as hotels, such as the River Lee for those who need a little extra comfort. It is about a 10-minute walk from main campus or from the Department of Music to Cork city centre.

Travel to Cork

Cork has a small international airport, which is around 15 minutes’ drive from UCC. Several European destinations are served, primarily by Aer Lingus and Ryanair. Both these operate as budget airlines on these routes, so it is generally simplest to book tickets online, and there are some good prices if one books ahead, noting the usual supplements for hold luggage, cancellation, etc.. If you fly from a destination not directly served, quotes from other airlines that include a transfer to Cork can be surprisingly costly; if so, just book the leg to Cork directly yourself from whichever city you prefer to transfer through (London, Manchester and Paris are all good options), allowing sufficient time for any potential hold ups on the first flight and for transfer within the airport in question.

Alternately, you might take an international flight to either Shannon or Dublin Airports and then hire a car—a good option if you want to see more of Ireland while on the trip or if you’re travelling with friends or family. There are also express coaches to Cork from each of these airports and a good train service from Dublin. Or, come to Ireland by ferry!

Conference Fee & Registration

The conference fee includes registration for the conference itself, the book of abstracts, tea or coffee and refreshments throughout the meeting, guest wifi access throughout the meeting, admission to the party on Friday night, lunch on Saturday and a wine reception prior to the keynote address on Saturday evening.

Student /OAP €80.00 (up to 30 June)

A late booking fee of €10.00 is charged for registrations received from 1 July onward.

Presenters who have not registered by 30 June will be removed from the programme.

Up to 5 students may apply for a conference assistantship, worth €75.00, in return for one day’s duty at the registration desk, book display or as technical help.

UCC is offering 1 student travel bursary of up to €150.00 for a student attending the conference from outside Cork.

Applications for the travel bursary or for an assistantship should reach Jonathan Stock by 16 June. Applications should include a short statement as to how the student anticipates benefiting from attending the conference and a brief reference from the applicant’s supervisor/programme director.
